Mrs. Vallie Mae Glispie Beidleman

Mrs. Vallie Mae Glispie Beidleman went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 21, 2010 in Knoxville, Tn at St. Mary’s Hospital.  She was preceded in death by her parents Luke and Alberta Glispie, husband Arthur Eugene Beidleman Jr., and four brothers, Rogers, Steve, Ellis, and Oliver.

She leaves behind her only sister, Lillian Louise Glispie (Grand Rapids, MI); four children, Mrs. Louberta Weatherton-Demorest, Veronica Smith-Beidleman, Mr. Arthur Eugene Beidleman II, and Mrs. Judy Vee Vance; Along with several grand children and great-grand children, nephews and nieces and other relatives and friends. She was a devoted mother, grand mother and great grandmother and a member of Lee Street Baptist Church.

 

Memorial Service will be held at Lee Street Baptist Church on July 31, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. W. A. Johnson, Officiating.  The family will receive friends and family from 1:00 p.m. till the hour of service.

Mrs. Louise M. Boyd

Mrs. Louise M. Boyd, 100 of 924 Oakland Drive Bristol, Va.  departed this life Thursday evening July 15, 2010 at Bristol Nursing Home.  Mrs. Boyd was a lifelong residence of Bristol, and a member of East State Street Christian Church.

 

Survivors include: 2 nieces Mrs. Barbara Lewis and Mrs. Gloria Jean Hughes and nephew Mr. Allen (Roberta) Hughes all of Bristol.

 

Interment services will be conducted from Eastern Heights Cemetery Bristol, TN Monday July 18, 2010 at 11:00am with Rev. William J. Reid officiating.    Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00am until the hour of service.

Mr. Robert Kent Wood (Kenny) McClanahan

Mr. Robert Kent Wood (Kenny) McClanahan, 342 Spring Street Bristol, VA departed this life on Friday, June 25, 2010 at his residence after a brief illness.

 

Mr. McClanahan was a member of New Hope Baptist Church he was in the Men’s Choir and other organizations. He was employed at UPS and has worked for Sears and Enterprise Rental Car.

 

Mr. McClanahan was the son of Richard & Cynthia McClanahan and Grandson of Bernice Washington.

 

Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2010 at Lee Street Baptist Church. Interment will follow Eastern Heights Cemetery, Bristol, TN

Mrs. Deborah Jean Davis

Mrs. Deborah Jean Davis, 58, 201 Carver Street, departed this life Tuesday afternoon at her residence.

Born in Kingsport, TN to the parents of Helen C. Spears and Vance R. Campbell. She attended Dobyns Bennett High School. Mrs. Davis was employed at OEO and Kingsport Press for 25 years.

Mrs. Davis was an active member of Central Baptist Church and a former member of Valley Street Baptist Church, Abingdon, VA. She was a member of the Elite Club, Kingsport, TN; former member of Douglass H.S. Marching Band.

She was preceded in death by her husband- Mr. Marshall Davis; Father Mr. Vance R. Campbell; Mother Mrs. Helen C. Spears; and Grandmother Mrs. Lizzie Russell.

She is survived by a daughter: Mrs. Tammy W. (Phillip)Campbell Adams; Several steps sons; Two grandchildren: NaTana H. Campbell and Zyioo V. Adams; one  sister,  Mrs. Joslyn Denese (Carlous)Morrison; specials sisters, Vicky Smith, Patricia Stockly, Nellie Foster, Dana Skaggs, Beverly Turner and one special daughter, Mary L. Beatty; Special life partner, Charles Walkins.

  

Funeral Services will be conducted from Central Baptist Church 2:00pm Monday June 14, 2010 with Pastor Ricardo F. Dorcean officiating. The Family will receive friends from 1:00pm until the hour of service. Interment will follow at Zion Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Pauline Lyons
Pauline Lyons, age 88, Departed this life on Saturday, May 29, 2010, at her residence. She was born on October 25, 1921, to Fred and Mary Gudger in Bristol, Tennessee. Pauline was close to her family; a wonderful mother, loving sister, and always gave her all to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also active with the Troy Senior Citizens Center.
Pauline is survived by her grandchildren, Maurice, Mona, Dorthea, Michelle, and Gina; brother, Robert (Idella) Gudger of Clearwater, FL; sisters, Laura Gudger of Toledo, and Dorothy Gudger of Bristol, TN; sister-in-law, Daisy Gudger, and a host of great-grandchildren and loving family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Lyons, son John, her parents, and 5 brothers.

Funeral Service for Mrs. Lyons will be conducted at Hood Memorial AME Zion Church on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. James Reddick , officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. till the hour of service. The interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Abingdon, VA.

Mrs. Virginia Cornelia Patton

Mrs. Virginia Cornelia Patton age 103, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday June 3, 2010 from Grace Healthcare in Abingdon, Virginia.  She was born in Chilhowie, Virginia on December 13, 1906.  She was preceded in death by her parents Mr. Theodore and Mrs. Mamie Franklin, her beloved husband Mr. William (Fox) Patton Sr. and her sister Mrs. Katie Mc Farland.  Cornelia was a very special and humble lady who loved her family, Bristol Tennessee, riding the bus, and working in the community with such organizations as The March of Dimes, Church Women United and others.  Most of all however, she loved her Church work in Lee Street Baptist Church where she was a member for many years.  She served in several capacities such as the Ladies Usher Board, Nannie H. Burroughs, Womens Missionary, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Shaffer Memorial Baptist Association.  She loved her friends and neighbors on McDowell Street and her special neighbor Mrs. Thelma Henderson.  She worked as a housekeeper for various families throughout the Bristol Community and was loved by many.  Survivors include her son, Mr. William (Fox) Patton Jr. of Johnson City, Tenn., Grand-daughter Tammy Patton Bristol, Tenn, Grandson Darien Patton, Bristol, Tenn., Great Grand Daughter Jessica Patton-Parks of Johnson City, Tenn, Great Grand Son Darien William Rogers, Virginia Beach, VA. Three Great great grandchildren and special  nieces, Elizabeth Francine Ivery, Abingdon, Va. Florence Elaine Jones, Phoenix Az. Sue Downer  of  Bloomfield Ct. Shonda  McFarland of Los Angeles California and other special  nieces, relatives and friends.

 

Funeral Service for Mrs. Patton will be conducted from Lee Street Baptist Church on Monday, June 7, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. W.A. Johnson, Officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. till the hour of service. The Interment will follow at High Point Cemetery, Abingdon, VA.

Mrs. Lelia White

Mrs. Lelia White 89, 330 Godsey Road Apt. #108 Bristol, TN. Departed this life at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, TN surrounded by her loving family and friends by her side.

She was a member of Harris Anderson A.M.E. Zion Church and a former member of Hood Memorial A.M.E. Zion. Mrs. White attended Slater High School. She had a quick wit and an enviable sense of humor.

 

She married Samuel L. White in 1938 with six children resulting from this union.

 

She was preceded in death by her three children, Sheila, Robert, and James; parents,  Mr. Robert and Mrs. Mollie Penn; sisters, Sophie, Jennie Mae, and Christina; brother, Frank.

 

Mrs. White is survived by: James Phillip, Patricia A. Horton, Lawrence Oliver, Robert “Rabbit” Samuel Eugene (Dianne) and Sheila Clark; her memory is also cherished by a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 

Funeral Service for Mrs. White will be conducted at 11:00 am on Monday, June 7, 2010 at Harris Anderson A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Mrs. Pamela Hoard, officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. till the hour of service.

The interment will follow at High Point Cemetery, Abingdon, VA.

Mrs. Ruth A. Spriggs

Mrs. Ruth A. Spriggs, 86, of Shelbyville departed this life on Thursday, May 20, 2010, at Major Hospital, Shelbyville, IN.

Mrs. Spriggs attended Beacon Baptist Church in Shelbyville before following her son, Pastor Arthur W. Spriggs, to Pleasant Heights Baptist Church in Indianapolis in 2005, and was a member of Everflowing Well Church in Bristol, Tenn.

Born July 2, 1923, in Crumpler, N.C., she was the daughter of Mr. Arthur and Mrs. Lucy (Hamilton) McMillan. She married Otis Spriggs, Sr. on Sept. 9, 1947, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1980.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Andrew Spriggs; daughters, Alberta Morton and Teresa Gaines; sisters, Juanita Misher, Viola Spellman and Goldie Novelton; brothers, Chris McMillan, Garland McMillan, and Haggard McMillan; and one grandson.

Survivors include her sons, Mr. Otis Spriggs Jr. of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Mr. Joniver B. Spriggs, Mr. Mark E. Spriggs, Arthur W. Spriggs, all of Shelbyville; daughter, Stephanie Birdwell of Shelbyville; sister Estelle Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa.; brother, Kenneth McMillan of Atlanta, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Funeral Service for Mrs. Ruth A. Spriggs will be conducted from Everflowing Well Church on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.  and  the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. till the hour of service. The Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

Mrs. Wilma V. Henderson Gaines, 81, 2701 E. Center St. Apt. 300. Departed this life on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at the Wellmont Bristol Hospice House

 

Mrs. Gaines was born in Madisonville, TN and made her home in Kingsport, TN for the past 50 years. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and she was the wife of the late Rev. James B. Gaines. Mrs. Gaines was involved in many activities at the Kiwanis Towers where she resided for the past 18 years.

 

Preceded in death by her husband, Rev. James B. Gaines; 1 son, Herald Gaines; father, Mr. Leonard Gaines and mother, Flora Henderson; 6 brothers & 1 sister.

 

Survived by 1 son, Mr. James Lovell Gaines, Detroit, MI; 3 grandchildren, Mrs. Tina Gaines (Henry) Stokely, Kingsport, TN,  Ms. Lovelle Gaines, Detroit, MI, & Mr. Christopher Gaines, Detroit, MI; 3 sisters Mrs. Gena Jackson, Knoxville, TN, Mrs. Novella (Paul) Caldwell, Inver Grove, MN, & Mrs. Magnolia Blair, Madisonville, TN; 1 brother, Mr. Harold Henderson, Sterling heights, MI; special friends Mrs. Bernice Hardy, Kingsport, TN, Mrs. Betty Jo Cody, Morristown, TN, and many friends at Kiwanis Towers.

John D. Matthews

John D. Matthews, age 60, departed this life on April 28, 2010 at Wuesthoff Medical Center, Rockledge, FL.  He was a former resident of Bristol, Va., and a 1968 graduate of Va. High School.  He resided in Coco, Fl., where he served as a Deputy at Brevard County Sheriff Dept.  John was an avid fan of the University of Tennessee.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Roy Eugene and Mrs. Hazel Matthews. 

 

He is survived by his loving wife, Terri;  1 Son, William “Deacon” (Courtney); 1 Daughter, Yolanda (Greg) Davis; 3 Granddaughters, Ebonie of Bristol, Va. , Kileigh and Makayla  of Coco Fl. ; 3 Grandsons,  Quentin, John Thomas and Jordan of Coco Fl; 3 Brothers, Robert J. Ms. Elizabeth (Ben) Thompson

Ms. Elizabeth (Ben) Thompson, 85, 607 Dale Street, Apt. #34. Departed this life on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center

Elizabeth was a lifelong resident of Kingsport.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Luther and Mrs. Marie Thompson; sister, Mrs Virginia Noaks, Mrs. Lucille Watterson, Mrs. Sarah Kincaid; one brother, Mr. June Thompson.

 

She is survived by one daughter, Ms. Marie Thompson Scott of the home; a special son, Mr. Robert (Bobby) Lane; one sister, Mrs. Jeanette Sensabaugh, Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Service for Mrs.  Elizabeth (Ben) Thompson will be conducted from Central Baptist Church on Monday, April 26, 2010 at 1:00p.m.  with Pastor Ricardo Dorcean Officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 noon till the hour of service.

Mrs. Luquita Brown

Mrs. Luquita C. Brown, 184 Springdale Road, answered the call of the Master on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the Wellmont Bristol Hospice House. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends.

 

Mrs. Brown was born June 20, 1930 in Faraday, WV to the late Thomas Lee and Pearl Young Cannaday.  She graduated from Excelsior High School and attended Bluefield State College.

Mrs. Brown was a faithful member of the Harris-Anderson A.M.E. Zion Church, Bristol, VA

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Mr. Wilmer L. Brown, Sr.; a son, Mr. Wilmer (WL) Brown, Jr. and a sister, Mrs. Yvonne C. Jones.

Mrs. Brown is survived by her children, Mrs. Lolita (Hirbry) Payton, Mr. Thomas (Teresa) Brown step children, Mr. Robert (Virginia) Hall, Mr. Richard (Constance) Clark and Ms. Brenda Hall; 4 grandchildren, 2 great grand-children, 2 great great- grandchildren, nine step grandchildren, ten step great grandchildren, 1 step great great grandchild; a nephew, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. James L. Bradley

Mr. James L. Bradley, 423 Sweetbrier Street, Glade Spring, VA departed this life on Monday, April 12, 2010 after a brief illness at his residence.

 

Mr. Bradley was born in Saltville, VA and made his home in Glade Spring for the past 27 years. He retired from the Raytheon Co. and was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and was a Mason. Mr. Bradley attended Douglass High School, Patrick Henry High School and Wytheville Community College. 

Preceded in death by his father, Mr. Kyle Bradley, Sr. & brother, Mr. Kyle Bradley, Jr.  

Survived by his wife, Mrs. Cynthia Jean Bradley; 2 daughters, Ms. Kenya Bradley, Ms. Bettye Brown; 2 grandchildren, Darius Bradley & Jah’von Graham; Mother, Mrs. Annie Butler Vannoy Bradley; 3 brothers, Mr. David (Sue) Bradley, Mr. William (Brenda) Bradley & Mr. Charles Bradley; several nieces & nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

 

In-Lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Mt. Calvary Community Church Building Fund.

Mr. William T. Dulaney

Mr. William T. Dulaney, 66, formerly of Bristol, VA departed this life on Friday, April 9, 2010 at the W.G. (Bill) V.A. Medical Center in Salisbury, NC. 

Mr. Dulaney was born February 26, 1944 in Bristol, TN. He attended Douglass Elementary and High School. He was a natural musician and enjoyed both piano and saxophone.

Mr. Dulaney was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

Mr. Dulaney was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Fred Dulaney, Sr. and Mrs. Catherine Grubb Dulaney; brothers, Kenneth, Fred, Jr. and Robert.

Survivors are Ms. Mary Dulaney, Charlotte, NC with whom he resided for many years; Mrs. JoAnn (Benjamin) Long, Huntsville, AL; Mr. Frank (Ellen) Dulaney, Kingsport, TN; Mr. James Dulaney, Decatur, GA; Lisa (Kamal) Hopkins, Charlotte, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at Lee Street Baptist Church. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. V.A. National Cemetery, Mnt. Home, TN.

Mrs. Stephanie Robbins Watty

Mrs. Stephanie Robbins Watty, 417 Pennsylvania Ave. Bristol, TN.  Mrs. Watty was born July 31, 1962, to the parents of Mr. John and Liz Robbins McDaniel. 

Stephanie was born in Evergreen, AL and grew up in Long Beach, CA and finally migrated to Bristol, TN.  On Thursday April 1, 2010 God with His infinite Wisdom called Stephanie to her new Mansion that he had prepared just for her.

Stephanie attended Roosevelt Elementary, College Intermediate Middle School,

Roger Jr. High and graduated with honors from Woodrow High School in Long Beach.  She also attended Lakewood Community College and was employed at

AARP until her health failed.

 

Stephanie accepted the Lord and was baptized in Nov. 1972 under the leadership of Rev. Joe Chaney.  Stephanie loved the Lord and tried her best to please the

Lord.  She had a love for the choir and a strong alto voice that she used to praise the Lord.  She served as director of the youth usher board.  Her ministry was a “helper”. Often time she didn’t feel well herself, but she always wanted to cheer someone else by sending a thinking of you or a “Get Well Card”.

Stephanie met and married her husband, Christopher Watty whom she often referred to as her “Big Baby” & “Her Child” because there were no children in the union.  They loved taking care and supporting each other.

 

She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving husband, Mr. Christopher Watty; her parents, Rev. James & Mrs. Liz McDaniel; 2 brothers Karl (Angelina) Robbins,

Bristol, TN;   Mr. James H. McDaniel Jr, Reidsville, NC; 3 sisters, Mrs. Valencia

The interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.

James Wilton Campbell Jr.,

James Wilton Campbell Jr., 58, died on March 16, 2010 at Mountain Home Veterans Hospital, TN after a brief illness.

 

James was a native of Johnston County, North Carolina born on May 6, 1951, the son of the late James Wilton Campbell Sr. and the late Louise Campbell Worley both of Johnston County.

 

He is survived by three sisters, Bonnie Rutherford and husband Cecil of Thomasville, Linda Hales and Annette Howell of Pine Level, North Carolina.

 

Mr. Campbell was laid to rest with military service in the Mountain Home Veterans National Cemetery on March 18, 2010 at 11:00am.

 

Military right was by D.A.V. Chapter #40 with Chaplin Paul Thomas officiating.

 

Arrangements were made by R.A. Clark Funeral Service, Bristol, TN.

Mrs. Marie Sensabaugh Pruitt

Mrs. Marie A. Sensabaugh Pruitt, 46, gently closed her eyes and went to sleep in the arms of Jesus, Monday, March 8, 2010 at her home after a lengthy illness.

 

She was born on August 16, 1963 in Kingsport, TN after graduating from Dobyns- Bennett high School in 1981, she later went on to graduate from Barton’s School of Cosmetology in Kingsport and was employed  at Marcleen’s Beauty Salon in Church Hill. She also was a Certified Nursing Assistant, working in Kingsport, TN, Sulligent, Alabama and Aberdeen, Mississippi. She married in 1996 and resided in Mississippi until she returned to this area in 2006.

 

Marie was preceded in death by her parents. Mr. James W. Sensabaugh and Mrs. Josephine McKinney Sensabaugh; grandparents, Mr. Nicholas and Mrs. Cora McKinney, Mrs. Willie Mae Sensabaugh, Mrs. Margaret and Mr. Richard Sensabaugh; several  Aunts and Uncles.

 

Survived by a very special God-Son, Dimingo (Sarah) Hale and sons; husband, Mr. Robert Pruitt, Jr. Mississippi; sisters, Mrs. Cora (Rick) Taylor, Mrs. Dorothy Sensabaugh and Mrs. LaMona  Derr; brother, Mr. James P. Sensabaugh, nieces and nephews, Daryl A. Hughes, II (Kayla), James Adrian Sensabaugh, Krystal Derr, Jessica and Brittany Sensabaugh; great niece, Tiara Hughes; and a host aunts, uncles and cousins

Sensabaugh Pruitt will be conducted Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. from the Full Gospel Mission Church 740 East Sevier Ave. with Pastor Gearldine Swagerty, officiating. Interment will follow at Tri City Memory Garden. The family will receive friends from 12 noon till the hour of service.

Mr. James Otis Payne, 76, 1208 Texas Ave. Bristol, VA. Departed this life early Tuesday morning, March 2, 2010 at his home.  A loving husband, stepfather and grandfather (Pap), Otis was a loving family man.

 

Born on August 28, 1933, he was the son of the late Jim and Lucy Payne. Otis was a member of Lee Street Baptist Church in Bristol. A member D.A.V. Chapter 40. Otis Served in the United States Army during the Korean War. His military decorations are a service Medal, United Nations Service and Bronze Service Stars, Army of occupation.

 

Otis was employed by Tri-Cities Security and a faithful addition to the family business B & L Tamales.

 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in death by his sister, Mrs. Lorraine Bowers; and his brother, Mr. George Payne.

Survived by his loving wife, Mrs. Lois V. Payne; 4 stepchildren, Mrs. Denise (Lee) Wagner, Mrs. Charlotte Stanton, Mrs. Valerie Fugate & Mr. Raphael (Willie) Cansler; and a host of grandchildren, cousins, nephews and nieces.

 

Funeral Service for Mr. Payne will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 2010 at Lee Street Baptist Church with Dr. W.A. Johnson, Officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. till the hour of service. The Interment Service will be held at V.A. National Cemetery on March 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. The cortege will depart Lee Street Baptist Church at 10:00 a.m.

Ms. Bettye J. Hughes, 75, 25 Court Drive departed this life Thursday February 25, 2010 at NHC Healthcare of Bristol.  Ms. Hughes was born and lived her entire life in Bristol.  She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Predeceased in death by her parents: Mr. Ulysses and Mrs. Sarah Hughes, two brothers William “Jack” Hughes and David Hughes.

Mrs. Iris C. Cloyd, 27 Court Drive Bristol, VA departed this life Monday, afternoon February 15, 2010 at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.

Robert Vance Stover, Jr.
Robert Vance Stover, Jr., 52, previously of Baltimore, MD, and of Kingsport, went to sleep in the Lord on February 5, 2010.
He was a graduate from Woodlawn Senior High School in 1976. He was a Navy veteran from October 26, 1976 to July 10, 1981, aboard the USS WMV Pratt. He was also a mechanic and a member of the welders union.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Dolores Hood; sisters, Carol Anne Regulski and Lynn Dougherty; brother, Steve Farr and very special friend, Shannon Summey.
Surviving are the love of his life and former wife of 13 years, Lydia Stover; daughter, Jennifer and a son, James and grandson, Maurice; mother of their children, Judy Robinson and son, Joey and daughters, Anastasia and Toshia. Titia Roberts-Hardie

Titia Roberts-Hardie age 38 died January 2, 2010 at Holston Valley Medical Center. Born in Rutherford County, North Carolina, she moved to Detroit at an early age and became a member of the New Light Baptist Church and became Assistant Surperintendent of the Youth Sunday School and co-head of the Youth Ministry. Mrs. Hardie was a student at Davenport University, where she was studying to be a coder in the Health Care industry. She is preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents and an infant daughter Ashley. Mrs. Hardie and her husband recently moved to Kingsport and had planned to stay. The family wishes to thank the WHVMC ICU for their efforts and for your kindness, they also wish to thank the Sullivan County EMS for their efforts to save her life. Mrs. Hardie is survived by her husband of 17 years Michael Hardie Kingsport, her parents David and Lillie Strurgis  Detroit, one sister Ella Albweitel Warren, MI two brothers Duane Sturgis, Farmington MI, and David Sturgis  II Detroit. She is also survived by two nieces and two nephews.

Mrs. Anita Marie Shelley

Mrs. Anita Marie Shelley was born September 15th 1939. She departed this life January 8th 2010 in her home of natural causes. 

Anita was a loving, caring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She was employed at the Bristol Wellness Center (YMCA) where she kept the nursery for 15+ years. She was fondly called “Nana” by not only her grandchildren, but also her nursery children and all the young people she took under her wing.  

She was a lifelong member of Lee Street Baptist Church in Bristol , Virginia where she served as a deaconess and faithful member of the gospel choir, women’s choir and the Tri-Cities Mass Community Choir.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Fred and Mrs. Edith Caldwell and her husband of 44 years, Mr. Louis Walter Shelley, Jr.

She leaves to mourn her death, her three sons: Mr. Tracy (Cathy) Shelley, Mr. Troy (Nicole) Shelley, and Mr. Todd (Helen) Shelley; six grandchildren, DeShaud, Staci, Corey, Talya, Tyra and Camryn.

Mr. Cloyd was a lifelong citizen of Bristol VA.  He served in the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, United States Air Force & Masonic Mason. He Attended Morristown College and retired from Smith Kline Beechem. A member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Shirley Preston

Mrs. Shirley Ann Sensabaugh Preston went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday November 25, 2009 at Wellmont Bristol Regional Center after a short illness.

She was born December 17, 1936 in Clinchco, Va to Henrietta and Brice Sensabaugh.  She retired from Raytheon Company after 26 years of employment.  Shirley was an active member of Lee Street Baptist Church where she served in may capacities.  Most recently, she served on the Deaconess board, W.M.S. and the Praise and Worship Team.  Her life was a reflection of her love for the Lord and her service to others.

Shirley is preceded in death by one son, Brock Sensabaugh Preston, her parents, Mr. Brice and Mrs. Henrietta Sensabaugh, and three brothers, Fred (Ruth) Williams, William, and Roy Sensabaugh.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years.  Thomas Preston, son Thomas Preston Jr. Bristol, Tn sisters Mrs. Lorraine (Harold) Barber, Alexandria, Va. Mrs. Helen (Olan) Farris, Bristol, Tn Mrs. Betty Carter, Bristol, TN Two Brothers, Carl(Doris) Sensabaugh, Lanham, MD.  Virgil (Laundria) Sensabaugh of Columbus, OH.  She is also survived by a s host of other family members and friends.

The family will receive friends from 1:30pm to 2:30pm at the Lee Street Baptist Church: Home going funeral services will follow at 2:30pm.  A committal service will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.  Nephews and great nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. James Howard (Mike) Fugate, 55, 424 Hill Park Dr., born July 24, 1954 went to be with the Lord November 24, 2009 at  Wellmont Hospice House In Bristol, Va.  He is the son of Mrs. Marie B Fugate and the late Mr. William Fugate of Abingdon, Va.

Born in Abingdon, Va Mike graduated from Abingdon High School in 1972.  After graduation he enlisted in the U.S.Navy for 4 years serving as postal clerk for the U.S.S Farragut,D.D.6.-37 home ported in Norfolk, Va.  Mike was employed at Sandvik Mining and Construction for 31 years.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother Clark Alexander (Zan) Fugate, Grandmother,  Nellie C. Luckey; Aunt  Rosa Powell and special cousin, Mildred Anderson

Mike is survived by his loving wife Mrs. Valerie C, Fugate of 24 years, two sons Michael James Fugate, and Desmond Alexander Fugate all of Bristol,Va;  Three brothers Robert W (Liz)Fugate, Thomas  A. (Patricia) Fugate both of Norfolk, Va. And Craig S. Fugate of Abingdon, Va. One sister Ms. Angela M. Fugate of Abingdon, Va. Mrs. Rosa C. Smith 67,   2161 Bradley St. Bristol, Va. departed this life Saturday September 12, 2009 at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, after a brief illness.  Mrs. Smith was a native of Abingdon, Va and for the past 51 years made her home in Bristol, Va.

She was a member of Everflowing Well Church, where she served as an usher. She was employed at Electrolux for 32 years.

Master Sgt. James William Swafford, Sr
Master Sgt  James William Swafford, Sr, 72 better known as “Sarge” or “Fatz” went to be with the Lord Sunday morning September 6, 2009 at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.

Born in Kingsport, TN March 21, 1938, he graduated from Douglas High School, was employed by Eastman Kodak Co. and Holston Valley Medical Center before attending N.C. A&T. He then pursued an outstanding career in the U.S. Army and retired as a Master Sgt. after 26 years of service. 

Sarge returned to Kingsport in 1981. He owned and operated “Sarges Place Restaurant” in the Riverview Community for 31 years. He will be remembered for his famous tank burgers, love dust sauce, and the saying “you don’t need no teeth to eat my beef”.

Sarge was a brother of the Clinch Mountain Lodge Elks #531 and a member of the American Legion Post  of Kingsport, TN.

Sarge was a Pillar of the Riverview community and will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Fannie M. Murrell, his father, James E. Swafford, father-in-law Lowell A. Webb, Sr.,  son-in-law Kirk Grady, and brother-in-law Fredrick P. Mills, Sr.

He is survived by his loving devoted wife of 40 years, Mrs. Olivia Swafford, sons, Eddie Swafford (April), James Swafford, Jr. (Jamie), daughter, Tanya Grady of Delaware, and mother-in-law, Rosemary Webb, sisters-in-law, Sylvia Mills, Lois Lawson, all of Philadelphia, PA, brother-in-law, Lowell Webb, Jr. (Evelyn) of Hockessin, DE, grandchildren Devaun Swafford, Jalen Grady, Jalen Swafford Burgess, Trahson Swafford White, Kariah Grady, Shadae Swafford, Malaya Swafford, Skysha Swafford, Dru Swafford White, Alanta Swafford, Jaliyah Swafford, one god child, Nika Tarter, and a host of family and friends.

Born June 21, 1941 in Augusta Arkansas, Blanche Harper, 68 of 1050 Tip Top Avenue in Kingsport Tennessee departed this life on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Bristol Wellmont Hospice House among her loving family and friends.  Blanche was the daughter of John Henry Bell, Sr., and Theola Dennis Bell.  She was preceded in death by her mother Theola Bell, husband Joe Harper, siblings Odis Bell, Jerry L. Bell,  Mildred Bell Grace and nephew Jeffrey G. Clark.

 

Blanche was married to Joe Harper in 1956 and out of this union seven children were born, Martha J. Harper, Terry J. Harper, Vincent W. Harper, Melvin L. Harper, Steven J. Harper, Marsha Y. Harper and Duane M. Harper.

 

Blanche was a member of Central Baptist Church in Kingsport TN and her hobbies were quilting, cooking, sewing, cleaning and taking care of her family.

 

Blanche is survived by her father, John H. Bell, Sr., brothers and sisters - John H. Bell, Jr., James Bell, Joseph Bell, Carolyn Bell Clark, Mary Ann Bell Segova, Ralph Bell, Dorothy Bell, Craig E. Rev. Lynch was raised in Hawkins Count. He retired from Eastman Chemical Co. and a Minister.

 

Preceded in Death by his parents, son, Kenneth L Lynch; three brothers, Mr. L.D. Lynch,  Mr. Monroe Lynch and Mr. Clarence Lynch;

“Eddie was born September 19, 1938 to will Edward ad Edith Swafford Worthington in Pikeville, TN.

 

He graduated from Pikeville H.S. class of 1957. He retired from Bristol Metals after 15 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parent and oldest brother James Worthington.

 

Survivors include his loving wife Mrs. Frances Coffey Worthington of Bristol. Three sons, Will Worthington, III, Corkey Worthington, Valrico, FL and Ray Tallas Pikeville,TN ; three step children, Darren, Tammy and Danita; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Freddie (Baragene) Worthington and Richard (Diane) Worthington; special cousins, James William (Olivia) Swafford, Kingsport, TN, Janette Miller of Greenville and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Worthington will be conducted at John Wesley united Methodist Church on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Rev. Donald Swift officiating.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. till the hour of service. The interment will follow at Forrest Hill Memory Gardens.

Lois A. Carrington, a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, July 3, 2009, at the age of 87 at Welmont Hospital. 
Lois was born September 14, 1921 to the late William and Callie Clay in Bristol, VA.   As a woman passionate about her church, Lois involved herself in several auxiliaries at Lee Street Baptist including being President of the Women*s Missionary Society, Chairperson of Special Dinners, active in the Baptist General Convention, and active in District & State Missionary work just to name a few.
In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her son Ellis Carrington.  She is survived by William Carrington and wife Adrienne of Fredericksburg, VA; Roberta Hughes and husband Allen of Bristol, VA; Frank Rocky Clay and wife Charlotte of Bristol, TN; and daughter Carolyn Gudger.  She will also be missed by thirteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and associates.

Dietrich A. Adetayo

With great faith, love and courage and a brief illness Dietrich A. Adetayo age 31, was born February 6, 1978 to Kehinde and Virginia "Val" Adetayo, and answered the Savior's call Sunday afternoon June 28, 2009 at his home on Bluff City Hwy. Bristol, TN.

Dietrich was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Juliana Adegdite Adetayo and Julius Adeniji Adetayo; maternal- grandfather Mr. Oadis White, Jr.; step-grandfather, Mr. Frank M. Broady, and great-grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Washington Sanders.
He was a 1996 graduate of Tennessee High School where he passionately played the saxophone and drums in the "Mighty Viking Band".  He attended East Tennessee State University and played in the E.T.S.U. Band.  He was a member of the Volunteer Drum Corp of Knoxville, TN, traveling extensively with the Volunteer Drum Corp.  Dietrich made time to take karate and Bible Study at Dave's Karate School with Dave Collins in Blountville, TN.
Dietrich taught private drum lesson, and after graduation worked with the drum line at Tennessee High School. Later Dietrich joined the Jacob Creek Job Corp where he enrolled and completed the Optical trade.  He was employed by Lens Crafters at the Bristol Mall, and afterwards, he was employed by the Jacob Creek Job Corp teaching the Optical trade. He was loved and highly respected there by the staff and students.
Dietrich accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Harris-Anderson A.M.E. Zion Church in Bristol, VA. He was also a member of Universal Lodge No. 239- MWPHGL, Free and Accepted Masons of TN. He was a member of the Echo Company Airsoft Team Sports Activity, playing in locations in East TN, VA, Nashville and GA. He recently accepted the position of 1st. Sgt. with the Caps Christian Youth Airsoft Team, owner and director, David Ramos. Their motto is  "There is always a Better Way!"
He leaves to cherish his memory, mother, Mrs. Virginia "Val" Kane; father, Kehinde Adetayo ; step-father, James P. Kane; grandmother, Mrs. Hattye B. Mrs. Sandra Marie Franklin departed this life on Monday, May 18, 2009 at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Franklin was born August 24, 1947 to the late Tyler and Beatrice Franklin; she was a graduate of Tennessee High School class of 1966 Bachelor of Arts and science Degree from Tennessee St. University, class of 93.

She received Jesus at an early age and was raised up in Hood Memorial Methodist Church.

Survivor includes two sons, Howard Mathew (Millie) Franklin and Kevin Pender (Lorrie) Mason; Three grandchildren, Sierra, Shane Mason and James Franklin; several cousins; special thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Lewis and good friend Ms. Beeler and staff at Shelby Towers.

Ballard P. Lee, Jr.

 

Bristol, Va. – Mr. Ballard P. Lee, Jr., age 64 died at his home on April 29, 2009. A great teacher and loving father, Ballard commanded respect through his enormous heart and stature. He helped so many to reach their full potential and he demonstrated through his service to others the true essence of God’s love.

 

Born March 24, 1945, he was the son of the late Ballard Lee, Sr. and Lottie Lee of Bristol, Virginia. Ballard was a member of the Lee Street Baptist Church in Bristol. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mrs. Shirley E. Worley, Ms. Carrie E. Lee, Mrs. Mary C. Foote and brothers, Mr. Robert H. Lee, Mr. Thomas W. Lee and Mr. Lincoln L. Lee.

 

Ballard served in the United States Marine Corps as a sergeant during the Vietnam War.

In 1972, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business from King College. There he played basketball as the team’s center and was later inducted into the King College Hall of Fame. Also known as Coach Lee, he was employed with the Bristol Virginia City Schools as an educator for 32 years and served nearly 18 years as the Virginia High boy’s basketball coach. He retired from Jacob’s Creek Job Corp in 2008.

 

He is survived by his loving wife Era A. Lee of 40 years, his son, Mr. Jason Todd Lee and wife, Ragini, their children, Derrick Jerron and Amaya Symone of Bristol, Va; and daughter, Mrs. Erika Lee Nasah and husband, Kuodjou of Glen Allen, Va.; sister, Mrs. Lois Yvonne Payne and husband, Otis of Bristol, Va.; brother-in-law, Kenneth Harville, Sr. and wife, Dorothy Harville of Johnson City, Tn.; special son, Mr. Michael L. Lee and special granddaughter, Danika Michale of Bristol, Va.; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

 

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at the Lee Street Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. W.A. Johnson presiding. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service.

Mr. Joseph “Joe” Elbert Bell

Mr. Joseph “Joe” Elbert Bell, 55, departed this life on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at his residence. 

Mr. Joe Bell was born March 11, 1954 in Flint, Michigan, the son of Dorothy and Sam Bell.  He attended the Flint public schools and graduated from Flint Northern High School, class of “1972”.  He furthered his education at Michigan State University and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.  Joe worked as a salesman in the Insurance and Advertising industries.  He was the founder and owner of National Hotel Guide, located in Bristol and was a member of the Lions Club.  Joe was an avid fan of basketball and he enjoyed throwing barbecues at his home for family and friends. 

Mr. Bell was preceded in death by his parents Sam and Dorothy Bell and other relatives

Ms. Roselene (Rose) Leona Bond, departed this life Monday (March 30, 2009) and went home to be with her Lord.
She was born in Sullivan County (Horse Creek) and lived in Kingsport all of her life. She retired from ITT. She was a lifelong member of Shiloh Baptist  Church.

Mr. Ronald Coleman Anderson

Mr. Ronald Coleman Anderson departed this life peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Greystone Health Care Center, Blountville, TN with his family around him. He was born December 6, 1938 in Abingdon, VA to the late Ernest Anderson and Catherine Anderson Clark. Mr. Anderson was educated in the public schools in Abingdon, VA and Kimball, WV.  He spent most of his adult life and employment in the Bristol area.

Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by two brothers, Phillip Anderson and Ernest W. Anderson, Jr.; three sisters, Evelyn Silas, Joanne Pope and Nancy Davis.

Survived by two sons, Patrick Anderson and Alex (Melissa) both of Bristol, TN; his former wife, Ms. Laurene Hogans of Bristol, TN;  grandchildren, Cloee and Coleman Anderson, and Mikala Elam all of Bristol, TN; sister, Frederica (Norman) Cook of Bristol, VA; brother-in-law, John Ed (Drucilla) Hogans, Jr.; several nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

Mrs. Francis Helen Mitchell

Frances Helen Mitchell, age 79, departed her life here and joined the Lord on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Born December 3, 1929, in Coalwood, WV, she was the adopted daughter of the late Edward and Della Bailey of Draper, VA. She was a graduate of Christiansburg Industrial Institute, Christiansburg, VA, and Morristown Junior College, Morristown, TN. She was a retired employee of the Bristol Herald Courier, news department, as a news editor for 20 years.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Willis Mitchell, Sr.; four sons, Willis Mitchell, Jr. and wife Joanne of Roanoke, VA, Myron, Raymond and wife Tonya, Abbey and wife Susan Mitchell; two daughters, Yetta Young and Beatrice Wagner and fiance, Franklin Gardner; and one adopted brother, Wilbur Huckstep and wife Margaret of Suitland, MD. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Barbara Lilly Springs
Barbara Lilly Springs was born December 13. 1937 in Davidson,  NC to the parentage of the late Charles and Janie Springs. Barbara truly confessing Christ at an early age. She committed herself to the Lord, His church and His people. She was active in her church, she served in the Women's Choir, Senior Choir and the Unity Fellowship Choir, as well as the New Hope Baptist Church Missions Ministry. She loved to travel with the Church.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and one great-grandson.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories, one daughter, Regina Springs, 2 grandchildren, Kevin Springs and Markeeta Springs. One special granddaughter, Michelle Springs, 5 great granddaughters, Teonna Austin, Ashlyn Austin, Diavian Springs, Madison Springs, Cherish Craigmire, 3 brothers, Terry Springs, John Springs, and Robert Springs. Other relatives and friends which include her New Hope Baptist Church Family.

                Doris Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ Golden Pender Oxendine

 

Doris Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ Golden Pender Oxendine was born on April 24, 1938 and departed her life early Saturday morning, February 7,2009. She was the seventh child of twelve siblings of Dathony and Louise Pender. She was born in Bristol, Virginia and lived here all of her adult life.  She met and married the love of her life James ‘Jay’ and out that union 4 children were born Janice Marie, Juandrea ‘Judy’ Roxann, and two that preceded her in death (Joan Elizabeth and James).  She was preceded in death by both parents Louise and Dathony Pender, maternal and paternal grand parents, 8 brothers and 2 sisters.

 

Pastor Oxendine education included: graduate of Douglas High School, Bristol, VA, Virginia Highlands Community College, Abingdon, VA and School of Nursing, San Diego, CA. She also received her Real Estate License, and her LPN Certification.

 

Pastor Oxendine accepted Jesus as her Savior in Christ and was an active member since her early childhood.  She was currently serving as Pastor for Morning Star FBH Church, for the past twenty one years.  While serving as Pastor she also served as Ambassador for Christ and held various positions with the Tennessee District. In her honor she was the recipient of a plaque for life long service with the Fire Baptist Holiness Church movement.

 

Pastor Oxendine served on Board of Directors Crisis Center, was the first woman to serve as President for the Bristol Area Ministerial Alliance. She served on the Board Of Directors Twin City Charter AARP, she was part of the chaplain staff at the Wellmont Center, Board of Directors People Incorporated, and also served as chaplain at the Bristol Virginia Correctional Center. Other organizations included March of Dimes, Community Food Pantry and NAACP. Pastor Oxendine served her community well and took pride in doing so.

 

Pastor Oxendine was an accomplished pianist, organist, and guitarist and was a recording artist, song writer, and composer. Sometimes in the evening you often hear her playing the harmonica. She was a member of ASCAPS, President of JPO Music Ministries, and President of Moneka Records. Pastors music career allow her to performed at the Apollo Theatre, New York, Jamaica and Australia.

 

Her last project she was working on was writing a book, she had completed her draft was in the process of having it published entitled “My Circumstances Will Not Dictate My Faith”.

Funeral Services for Pastor Oxendine will be conducted at Lee Street Baptist Church, 1 Mary Street Bristol, VA on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. with Dr. W.A. Johnson, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. till the hour of service.  The interment will be conducted at Mt. View Cemetery, Friday, February 13, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.

James W. (Big Dag) Dukes, Sr.
James W. (Big Dag) Dukes, Sr.  entered into the waiting arms of our heavenly father  September 24, 2009 in Knoxville, TN. Dr. Katheryne V. Moore
Dr. Katheryne V. Moore, 67, died Aug. 13, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. Funeral services will be at  2:00 p.m. on Tuesday August 18, at Long Branch First Baptist Church in Grover, NC.  Arrangements are with J.W. Gill and Sons in Kings Mountain, NC.

Mrs. Emma Bailey

Mrs. Emma Bailey was born on July 8, 1913, in Yazoo City, Mississippi. She moved to Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia in 1925 and lived a rich and fruitful life there until four years ago when she moved to Chicago, Illinois to live with her son and his family. On February 20, 2009, at the age of 95, after a brief illness, Emma made her transition to be with our Lord. In between, she lovingly earned the titles of; Mother, Granny, Sister, Aunt, Friend, Classmate, Club member, Neighbor, and Miss Emma.

 

Emma attended Slater High School in Bristol and was a lifelong, faithful member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.

 

Emma was preceded in death by her mother, Janie Louis Gregory; son, William Earl Goodrum; devoted companion Wilbur “Babe” Woods, and sisters, Patsy Jane Jackson, Sue Esther Gregory and Eleanor Byrdsong. She leaves to cherish her life’s good works a loving and devoted son, Charles Alfred Goodrum, his wife, Alice; a sister, Mona Jean Smith of Corona California; a niece, Margo White of Bristol, Tennessee; a nephew, Miles Morrison (Dinah) of California; and extended family, Emily, Billy and Ida Perkins; four grandchildren, Cassandra Goodrum Burton and her husband, Alfred; Charles Alfred Goodrum, Jr., his wife Donna; Kimberly Ann Goodrum; and Kevin Goodrum, and his wife Kaye. Her memory is also cherished by 14 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of loving friends and neighbors.
